Financial Times: Washington Will Not Attack Iran Prior to Midterm Elections

The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is actively seeking to resume large-scale military strikes against Iran, while a White House official affirmed U.S. President Donald Trump's opposition to reigniting the conflict ahead of the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
According to the Financial Times, Netanyahu instructed the Israeli military earlier this October to draw up plans for a new military offensive against Iran. The Israeli military subsequently prepared for a multi-day bombing campaign targeting civilian infrastructure—such as power plants—in addition to nuclear facilities and targets linked to the Iranian regime, according to three informed sources.
White House Response
Anna Kelly, Deputy White House Press Secretary, told the paper that "Iran is in a very bad shape, both economically and militarily," noting that U.S. efforts to blockade Iranian ports and facilitate Gulf oil exports through the strait are proving successful.
Regarding the potential resumption of strikes on Iran, Kelly emphasized that "the United States will not attack Iran at any time prior to the midterm elections."
Axios had reported last week that Netanyahu and Trump discussed renewing large-scale military attacks against Iran before the upcoming U.S. and Israeli elections. However, a U.S. official denied that the two leaders held any such discussions.
In a related context, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth traveled to Israel on Monday, holding talks with Netanyahu and other senior officials, according to an Israeli official.
One source noted that Israeli officials presented an updated list of potential targets in Iran based on new intelligence, including civilian infrastructure targets that were not struck earlier this year.
The Pentagon has not yet commented on the accuracy of these reports.
Recent days have seen escalated rhetoric from both Trump and Netanyahu against Iran. The U.S. President warned of launching further strikes "unless [Tehran] rapidly changes its ways," while Netanyahu posted a video from an Israeli airbase seated in front of a fighter jet, addressing Trump: "Donald, you said we have a job to finish, and we will finish it together."
