Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, head coach of Real Madrid, delivered strong remarks regarding Brazilian player Vinicius Junior, expressing his admiration for the player's ability to overcome the difficulties he faces, while affirming that if he were in the player's position, he would consider moving to another country where he would receive more respect and appreciation.
Mourinho's statements came during the press conference held ahead of Real Madrid's match against Sevilla, scheduled for tomorrow in the La Liga, during which he addressed the challenges Vinicius encountered during the recent match against Roma, the controversy sparked by footage of the coach mocking the player, and his four-match suspension.
The Portuguese coach's remarks come at a time when Vinicius is facing continuous pressure amid racial abuse in football stadiums, alongside crises and controversies surrounding some of his actions and stances, culminating in his recent disciplinary suspension.
Mourinho spoke about the previous match against Roma and the widely circulated video in which he mocked Vinicius Junior for backheeling the ball, explaining that the player faced severe difficulties during the match, though he placed the primary responsibility on Roma's coach, Gasperini.
Mourinho said: "Vinicius played a very difficult match, and from my point of view, Gasperini is most responsible for the difficulties he faced, because he directed all his weapons to our side of the pitch, deploying Beesley, Soulé, and Mancini against Cucurella and Vinicius."
He added: "It was extremely difficult for me, as a coach, to make substitutions, because some instructions reached the players correctly, while others did not arrive as required."
He continued: "In the second half, Roma players' energy ran out, and things changed. What bothered me was the way the second goal came, at a time when the match was even and we were not facing any problems. He should not have done what he did, but it is over, and it does not deserve all this fuss."
The Real Madrid coach emphasized that substitutions are a natural part of football, stating: "I made five substitutions, not just one. Substitutions are part of football."
He also noted that Vinicius needs to continue working hard, expressing his belief that the player will likely start Wednesday's match, without making any definitive promises regarding his participation.
Mourinho's most notable statements came when discussing Vinicius Junior's character, praising his ability to overcome difficulties and maintain his smile, before asserting that he might not have handled the same situations in the way the Brazilian player chose to.
Mourinho said: "He is a wonderful person, and it is easy to build a good relationship with him. I spend a few minutes alone with him every day. I like him a lot; he is an exceptional person."
He added: "I give him a great deal of credit, because he always manages to move on with his life and overcome difficulties with a smile. If I were in his place, maybe I wouldn't have stayed here. I would have forced the club to agree to my transfer to another country where I am respected, but he stayed because he belongs to Real Madrid and loves the club."
Concluding his remarks on the Brazilian player, he said: "He believes things can get better, and he keeps smiling. Nothing and no one can take that away from him."
Mourinho Defends Arda Güler
The Portuguese coach touched upon the possibility of Arda Güler nearing a role in central midfield, defending the Turkish player and affirming that he is still developing, despite possessing immense talent and capabilities that allow him to perform various roles.
Mourinho said: "He is working. It seems to me that you find it very difficult to give work the appreciation and recognition it deserves. It appears that negative things have owners, while positive things are attributed to luck."
He added: "Arda is a player with great talent, but he has not yet reached—fortunately—the stage of a completed player. He has the potential to play in different positions. I am very happy with him."
Players' Fatigue Ahead of Sevilla Clash
Regarding the physical condition of his players ahead of the match against Sevilla, Mourinho explained that they are feeling some fatigue, but expressed confidence in their ability to regain sharpness prior to the game.
He stressed: "The players are tired, but they won't be tomorrow. I believe so, and based on what I saw in the medical department, they are feeling some fatigue, but we will be fine tomorrow."
He noted that the coaching staff has good options to make changes and provide the team with necessary vitality, before praising his opponent, saying: "Sevilla is a great team, and they always compete away from home. Luis Garcia is doing a fantastic job. It will be a very difficult match, but we want to win."
