US President Donald Trump acknowledged that the war with Iran contributed to the Republican Party's losses in the midterm elections held on Tuesday, at a time when Democrats seized control of the Senate amidst media estimates indicating their majority win in the House of Representatives—posing a major challenge to his legislative agenda during the final two years of his second term.
In a telephone interview with the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal, Trump stated, in response to a question regarding the war's impact on Republican electoral performance, that "Iran was part of the reasons for that." However, he emphasized that he does not regret the decision to launch the war and would make the same decision again.
Trump considered that the surge in oil and fuel prices resulting from the war posed a heavier political burden on Republicans than the war itself, driven by growing voter dissatisfaction with the cost of living.
The US President rejected viewing the election outcomes as a popular rejection of his presidency, noting that he was not on the ballot, writing on his platform Truth Social: "I was not on the ballot, and had I been, we would have achieved a landslide victory."
In media remarks, Trump signaled his willingness to exercise the presidential veto against bills passed by the Democrat-led Congress, emphasizing his readiness to block legislation he opposes while expressing openness to reaching deals with them.
Speaking in an interview with CBS News, Trump stated he holds the "ultimate authority" represented by the veto power, suggesting that using it could compel Democrats to negotiate with his administration.
US media projections showed Democrats capturing control of the Senate following gains in Republican-leaning states, including Texas, Kansas, and Ohio, while the party continues to advance in the House of Representatives.
A Democratic-controlled Congress will significantly bolster their oversight capacity regarding the Trump administration and disrupt several of its legislative priorities, while the President retains the veto power, which requires a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override.
