The Democratic Party achieved a "historic victory" in the US Senate election in Kansas for the first time since 1932, after candidate Adam Hamilton defeated incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall, according to US media projections, ending a 94-year streak of consecutive Republican victories in Senate elections across the state.
CNN announced Hamilton's victory—a Methodist pastor running in his first electoral contest—over Marshall, who was seeking a second term in the Senate, in one of the most prominent surprises of the congressional midterm elections.
According to data from Decision Desk HQ, a firm specializing in election tracking, Hamilton secured 52.1% of the vote compared to 44.93% for his Republican rival, with approximately 91% of the votes counted, prompting the organization to project the race in favor of the Democratic candidate.
This win marks the first Democratic victory in a Kansas Senate race since George McGill's win in 1932, prior to his loss in his 1938 re-election bid to Republican Clyde Reed.
Since then, Republicans have won every Senate election in the state, marking the longest continuous winning streak for a single party in Senate elections across all US states.
Notably, the specific seat held by Marshall had been under Republican control since 1919, lending additional historic weight to Hamilton's victory.
Hamilton, 61, is the founder of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in the Kansas City area, which ranks among the largest Methodist congregations in the United States, boasting approximately 25,000 members.
Hamilton campaigned on a platform focused on lowering the cost of living, healthcare, and energy, alongside criticizing tariffs and economic policies of President Donald Trump's administration, while advocating for overcoming partisan divisions.
The race gained heightened significance after the contest in Kansas—traditionally a strongly Republican state—turned into a tight battle, despite Trump winning the state by a margin exceeding 16 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.
The campaign saw direct intervention from Trump and Vice President JD Vance in support of Marshall, whereas Hamilton garnered endorsements from several moderate Republicans, including former governors of the state.
The Democratic victory in Kansas comes amid broader gains made by the party in Senate elections, as both parties contended for control of the chamber during the final two years of Trump's presidential term.
