MP Yanal Freihat affirmed that the victory of MP Malek Al-Tahrawi as Assistant Speaker of the House of Representatives carries an important political message, noting that while the position may not hold immense practical significance for citizens, its political and partisan implications are substantial.
In a statement to "Rum," Freihat said that the Umma Party had been subjected to exclusion over the past three years and had failed to secure any position within the House of Representatives despite representing the largest bloc, considering Al-Tahrawi's election as a first step toward doing justice to the party and making it feel like an integral part of the political components.
He added that the presence of a youth figure from the Umma Party alongside the Speaker of the House for an entire year carries a vital message internally and externally—that Islamists in Jordan possess their unique character and are partners in the governance structure. He stressed that even while remaining in opposition to governments, the party is an intrinsic part of the state, the regime, and its institutions.
Freihat pointed out that the Umma Party's stance will remain steadfast regarding issues concerning Jordanians, foremost among which is the Social Security Law, affirming the party's continued opposition to this law and various other legislations impacting citizens' daily lives.
He noted that prior understandings and consensuses preceding the permanent bureau elections failed, with the exception of the consensus on the Speaker—who won by a single-vote margin—while the election results for the First and Second Deputy Speakers, as well as assistants, fell outside the expectations and partisan alliances that had sought to exclude the Umma Party.
