Under the patronage of the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Dr. Imad Hijazeen, the sixth edition of the global Half Marathon des Sables (MDS 120 Jordan) concluded yesterday. The event saw international participation exceeding 500 competitors, predominantly from European markets, offering a sports and tourism experience spanning Wadi Rum, Petra, and the Dead Sea. It was organized by Jordan Experience Tours and Travel in partnership with its French associate, with support from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Jordan Tourism Board (JTB), and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA).
Official Spokesperson and Board Member of the Jordan Tourism Board, Hani Al-Dabbas, emphasized that attracting such tournaments embodies the strategic vision of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Board, under the leadership of H.E. Dr. Imad Hijazeen, toward solidifying sports tourism as a promising economic and tourism product. He noted that such events help penetrate new international markets, counter seasonal demand fluctuations, extend visitor stays, and maximize economic returns for local communities.
Al-Dabbas pointed out that the upcoming phase focuses on attracting high-profile international events and turning the Kingdom’s natural and heritage assets into global platforms for tourism promotion, enhancing Jordan’s competitiveness and cementing its standing as an international destination for adventure tourism and sports events.
The closing ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Dead Sea Hotel featured a recognition ceremony for Minister Hijazeen and the announcement of plans to continue hosting international sports events in Jordan over the coming years.
