September 10th will be a real test for Jordan’s political and parliamentary journey, as parties will face this challenge based on the new party and election laws born from the process of modernizing the political system, which His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein wanted to make a continuous democratic journey through a clear plan that reflects the directions and aspirations of Jordanians, leading to a parliament that includes effective programmatic parties. This coincides with two other paths to uplift the national economy and to reform, activate, and maximize the performance of public administration to be able to interact with the comprehensive uplift process that meets the requirements of moving into a second centennial of the state’s life, more disciplined, stable, and influential.
His Majesty the King was keen to issue the royal decree to conduct this electoral entitlement to choose the new members of the House of Representatives from the headquarters of the Independent Election Commission on the tenth anniversary of its establishment, to emphasize the necessity of not being lenient regarding any violation that may affect its integrity, whether parliamentary elections or elections of governorate councils or municipalities, as well as the importance of encouraging citizens to participate in the elections, ensuring all procedures that facilitate this process, and attracting voters to it, especially youth and women.
The order has been issued, and the Independent Commission has decided on September 10th, and the Chairman of the Commission’s Board of Commissioners, Engineer Musa Maaytah, confirms that the Commission has prepared itself, formed its main committees, organized the voter registers and procedures related to their voting for local and general lists, and all this is considered a kind of preparing the suitable environment for the electoral process, which is in itself a very important matter that needs to be completed in cooperation and coordination with all related parties and entities to be ready for this constitutional entitlement from procedural, legal, and political aspects.
The real test will be for the national parties that will compete for forty-one seats out of one hundred and thirty-eight, and they realize that their participation lies at the heart of this modern experience in Jordanian parliamentary life that aims to expand the base of popular participation in decision-making, according to a programmatic perspective that makes them akin to a shadow government that monitors the executive authority based on it, and presents its vision on public affairs based on set strategies and precise facts and information, away from individual impressions or personal interests!
Although the time period since their formation based on the new election law and the scheduled date for the parliamentary elections is relatively short, most parties have prepared themselves to enter the fray within logical directions that take into account the usual social criteria in Jordanian parliamentary life throughout its long history, to integrate with it, leading to the stage where governments will be formed by the parliamentary party majority!
It is necessary to view this new party experience as the first step in a long journey, and perhaps it is the most important step and the first test for it in front of the electorate who will judge its performance negatively or positively through actual practice in parliament, which is, of course, a public and tangible practice, and in that lies a great and heavy responsibility that must be carried with honesty and dedication because the goal is not just to reach the parliament itself, but to deepen and consolidate the democratic path and contribute to building the new Jordan!
