Jordan has advanced 14 ranks in the 2024 Freedom Report issued by Reporters Without Borders regarding the press freedom ranking for the year 2024.
Jordan ranked 132nd out of 180 countries included in this year’s report, while it was in the 146th position in the 2023 report, and ranked 120th according to the 2022 report.
Reporters Without Borders released the annual World Press Freedom Index for 2024, which assesses the state of press freedom in 180 countries and regions annually.
Based on the index results, 36 countries were classified as “very dangerous,” and 49 countries as “difficult,” 50 countries as “problematic,” and 45 countries as “good” or “fairly good,” according to CNN’s report this Friday.
Reporters Without Borders is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization whose declared goal is to protect the right to freedom of information.
The index uses five new measures to assess press freedom, including: political context, legal framework, economic context, social and cultural context, and safety. These indicators are evaluated based on the quantitative statistics of violations against journalists and media, and qualitative analysis based on the responses of hundreds of press freedom experts chosen by Reporters Without Borders (including journalists, academics, and human rights defenders) to more than 100 questions.
The report mentioned that this year, at the international level, there is a clear absence of political will on the part of the international community to enforce principles of journalist protection, especially United Nations Security Council Resolution 2222.
The war in Gaza has been marked by a record number of events and violations against journalists and media since October 2023.
According to the 2024 Press Freedom Index, the Palestinian territories occupy the 157th rank among 180 countries and regions included in the survey in the World Press Freedom Index for 2024, but they are among the last ten countries concerning the security of journalists.
