The Jordanian Journalists Syndicate Council affirmed that World Press Freedom Day embodies the media’s right to freedom of expression and the importance of protecting journalists’ rights and ensuring their safety while practicing their profession.
The council expressed in a statement on Saturday, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, its deep concern over the escalating violations and killings that journalists in the Arab world, especially in Gaza and Palestine, are subjected to, condemning policies that suppress freedom of expression and restrict the media space.
The statement noted that this day celebrates journalists and their achievements, and what has been accomplished in protecting journalism and journalists, and safeguarding the right to freedom of opinion and expression. It emphasized that protecting journalists is not just a moral duty; it is a humanitarian obligation on the international community, necessitating intensified efforts to ensure press freedom and the safety of journalists around the world, especially in war-torn and conflict areas.
The council stated that it will not hesitate for a moment to defend press freedom, media freedom, and freedom of speech, praising the decision of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to award its press freedom prize this year to the journalists of Gaza who cover the Israeli war on the sector, considering it a “fairness” to their sacrifices, and an appreciation and honor for their efforts, and their continued professional and capable media work since the beginning of the war on Gaza.
