US President Donald Trump signs, Wednesday, proclamation withdrawing United States from 35 non-UN organisations and 31 UN-affiliated bodies ‘working against US national interests’, White House says.
White House does not name organisations but says they promote ‘extreme climate policies, global governance, and ideological programmes’ conflicting with US sovereignty and economic strength.
Decision follows comprehensive review of all international governmental organisations, agreements, and treaties in which United States holds membership or party status.
Statement says withdrawals end US taxpayer funding and participation in entities prioritising globalist agendas over US interests, or operating with insufficient efficiency and effectiveness, adding funds better directed to other missions aligned with national priorities.
Since start of second term one year ago, Trump administration moves to cut US funding to United Nations, halts participation in UN Human Rights Council, extends suspension of funding to UNRWA, and withdraws from UNESCO.
Administration also announces plans to withdraw from World Health Organization and Paris climate agreement.
