Senate President Faisal Fayez called for stronger legislation to regulate AI and prevent its misuse by terrorist groups and discussed the growing role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting peace and stability across the Middle East.

Speaking at the 10th Summit of Speakers of Parliaments of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean in Cairo on Saturday, Fayez said AI and emerging technologies have accelerated economic growth and supported efforts to combat terrorism.

He warned that AI is increasingly being exploited to spread misinformation, fuel extremism and develop tools of violence.

He urged parliaments to enact legislation that addresses the rapid evolution of AI, imposes strict penalties for its misuse and ensures its safe and ethical application in support of sustainable development.

Fayez discussed the role of parliamentary diplomacy in complementing Jordan's foreign policy under His Majesty King Abdullah II by fostering dialogue, easing tensions and advancing peaceful conflict resolution.

Addressing regional developments, he called on international parliamentary bodies to intensify efforts to end conflicts in the Middle East, reaffirming support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.

He urged support for the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, describing it as a step toward enhancing regional security and stability.

The summit is discussing parliamentary diplomacy, women's political participation and the ethical use of artificial intelligence to advance peace and sustainable development across the Mediterranean region.
