A Gulf source reported on Tuesday that Oman has submitted a proposal to Iran regarding a joint regional mechanism for managing the Strait of Hormuz through voluntary fees.
The source added to Reuters that the Omani proposal enjoys regional support.
The proposal is modeled after the Malacca Strait framework, where users of the strait voluntarily contribute to funding navigation services, environmental protection, and search-and-rescue operations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed issues related to the security of the Strait of Hormuz in two separate phone calls with his Saudi and Omani counterparts, according to a statement published on his Telegram channel on Tuesday.
The statement noted that Araghchi discussed with both ministers the "latest bilateral and regional developments," emphasizing the need to strengthen cooperation and continue joint diplomatic efforts to establish stability in the region.
A cautious calm has prevailed between Iran and the United States for the third consecutive night amid a halt in direct strikes between the two sides. This coincides with statements from US President Donald Trump regarding "very deep" negotiations with Tehran, alongside regional and international diplomatic efforts to find an exit from the confrontation.
To date, there is no official announcement of a cease-fire or an agreement between the two sides. However, the suspension of military operations, coupled with ongoing contacts, raises questions about the nature of the current phase—whether it represents an unannounced de-escalation or a temporary pause awaiting the outcomes of the negotiation track.
This relative calm follows 13 consecutive nights of US strikes on Iran, which Tehran countered with attacks targeting—according to its statements—American bases and interests in the region, before both sides refrained from executing new direct strikes.
