South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated on Thursday that Seoul estimates North Korea possesses between 80 and 120 nuclear warheads, a figure significantly higher than US President Donald Trump's assertion that Pyongyang holds 57 nuclear weapons, according to reporting by The Korea Times.
The minister noted that determining the exact number remains extremely difficult. Speaking before a parliamentary committee, he stated: "Our estimates have always indicated that North Korea possesses between 80 and 120 nuclear warheads, but it is very difficult to determine the precise number," as reported by Korea JoongAng Daily.
He later clarified that this range is based on estimates from private research organizations, adding that the South Korean military cannot officially confirm these numbers, as detailed by The Korea Herald.
Responding to a question regarding Trump's remark on Wednesday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un possesses 57 "very powerful nuclear weapons," the South Korean minister remarked that "the numbers appear to differ somewhat," according to The Independent.
Trump made those statements at the White House on Wednesday while discussing Kim Jong Un and his intention to hold a meeting with the North Korean leader later this year, as noted by The Japan Times.
