Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on Thursday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is "dragging Turkey into dangerous adventures in Syria," asserting that Israel "will not allow any entity to threaten its security."
Writing on X in both Hebrew and Turkish, Katz remarked: "It is better for Erdoğan to continue his delusional speeches, detached from reality, against Israel inside the Turkish parliament, rather than attempting to test Israel's determination to defend itself."
On Wednesday, Turkey strongly rejected what it termed "baseless allegations" by Israel concerning Ankara's military footprint in Syria. The Israeli statements followed an Israeli strike on a Syrian airbase near the Turkish border, launched under the claim that Syria was on the verge of allowing Turkish forces to deploy there.
Syrian Foreign Minister As'ad Al-Shaibani stated that he had clarified to Israel that no plans existed to establish a Turkish military base at the Abu al-Duhur airbase—which Israel struck on Tuesday—explaining that the site was undergoing rehabilitation for use by the Syrian Air Force.
Al-Shaibani added that Turkish military personnel had visited the base within the framework of broader training and military cooperation, while denying any Turkish military reinforcements and noting that the facility was largely unoccupied with work not yet initiated.
In an interview with Axios on Wednesday, Al-Shaibani affirmed: "There is no intention to establish a Turkish base there, nor to deploy a permanent Turkish military presence or Turkish forces at the location."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Wednesday that Israel had warned Syria prior to the strike against allowing a Turkish presence at the base, adding: "Our message was very clear. Do not do it. I believe they did not fully absorb the message."
