U.S. authorities charged a woman on Thursday with supporting the ISIS terrorist organization after she informed a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informant of her desire to "destroy" the New York State Capitol building, according to court documents.
Located in the city of Albany near the Canadian border, the New York State Capitol serves as the vital hub of state government and houses both chambers of its legislature.
Jessica Bowe, 35, was charged with attempting to provide material support to designated "foreign terrorist organizations," court records show.
Authorities state that the woman converted to Islam and became a staunch online supporter of ISIS, posting anti-U.S. messages, some of which expressed support for the perpetrators of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Case documents indicate that she informed an FBI informant of her support for the banned group and sought guidance on how to manufacture explosives.
The filings state that Bowe told the informant she "would make sure to go on picnics near the Capitol for surveillance" and to assess security measures.
She continued in her conversation with the informant: "I want to destroy as much of the building as possible and kill senators while they are in session. I also want them to lose a lot of important documents."
The accused noted that she considered posing as a food delivery driver to enter the facility and plant a bomb before fleeing to Syria.
She added that if her escape proved successful, she could return to the United States to target other high-profile sites, including Times Square in New York.
After acquiring a delivery company bag and bomb-making components—including nails intended for use as shrapnel—the FBI arrested Bowe on August 19.
Bowe was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, and her attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
