The Iraqi National Security Service (INSS) announced on Thursday that it thwarted an attempt to manufacture unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) inside the capital, Baghdad, arresting three suspects and seizing 25 drone airframes along with assembly and production equipment.
Speaking at a press conference, INSS spokesman Arshad Al-Hakim stated that the operation was executed following intelligence efforts under the supervision of the judge of the Third Investigative Court. Investigations led to the discovery of a workshop containing carbon-material panels, manufactured components, and technical supplies used across various stages of drone production. Al-Hakim confirmed that security forces disrupted the manufacturing process prior to completion and initiated legal proceedings against the suspects.
Reviewing the agency's performance during the first half of 2026, Al-Hakim highlighted several key operational achievements:
Cybersecurity and Public Funds: The INSS neutralized 754 cyberattacks and addressed 2,740 online accounts deemed threatening to community peace. Additionally, the service recovered over IQD 93 billion for the state treasury and seized $14 million along with IQD 12 billion, which were deposited with the Central Bank of Iraq.
Counter-Terrorism and Security Operations: Security forces arrested 40 members and leaders belonging to a front for the banned Ba'ath Party and dismantled two cells planning to target political and security figures and monitor sensitive security sites.
Anti-Corruption and Land Fraud: In Al-Muthanna Governorate, the agency dismantled a network manipulating land records, arresting 61 suspects and uncovering more than 90 forged transactions involving an estimated IQD 2 billion in squandered public funds.
