Iraq’s National Security Service (INSS) announced on Thursday that it thwarted an attempt to manufacture unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) inside the capital, Baghdad. Operations led to the arrest of three suspects and the seizure of 25 drone airframes along with specialized assembly equipment.
During a press conference, INSS Spokesperson Arshad Al-Hakim stated that the operation was executed following intensive intelligence gathering supervised by the judge of the Third Investigation Court for National Security Cases. Investigations uncovered a illicit workshop housing carbon-fiber panels, manufactured components, and technical supplies integral to drone fabrication.
Al-Hakim confirmed that security forces interdicted the operation prior to the completion of manufacturing processes, and legal proceedings have been initiated against the detainees.
Highlighting broader operational metrics for the first half of 2026, Al-Hakim revealed that the agency countered approximately 754 cyberattacks and neutralized 2,740 social media accounts deemed threats to social peace.
Financial intelligence operations during the same period recovered over IQD 93 billion to state coffers, while seizing $14 million USD and IQD 12 billion, which were deposited directly into the Central Bank of Iraq.
Furthermore, the INSS dismantled two subversive cells and apprehended 40 operatives and leadership figures affiliated with a front organization for the banned Ba'ath Party. The cells had been actively surveying sensitive military sites and planning targeted attacks against high-profile political and security personalities.
In anti-corruption efforts, the agency dismantled a land-fraud ring in Al-Muthanna Governorate, arresting 61 suspects and identifying over 90 forged deeds and transactions that prevented an estimated IQD 2 billion loss in public funds.
