JFDA: Field Survey Conducted to Monitor Compliance with "Gluten-Free" Product Requirements
The Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) announced that its specialized inspection teams conducted a field survey to monitor compliance with requirements for gluten-free products.
JFDA Director General Rana Obeidat explained that the field survey has so far covered the inspection of 61 establishments, including bakeries, restaurants, cafes, and shops, alongside tracking licensing status and laboratory testing results of samples. She added that the survey results to date showed compliance by most licensed facilities with approved requirements, while four non-compliant establishments were identified and had their production lines suspended to rectify their status.
The Administration urged all facilities operating in the trade of gluten-free products to comply with approved legislation and instructions regarding obtaining the necessary licenses from the JFDA. It stated that trading (manufacturing, preparing, selling, or processing), advertising, or serving any product under the label or claim of "Gluten-Free" without obtaining the necessary approval from the JFDA is strictly prohibited, ensuring the safety of individuals whose health conditions require consuming gluten-free products.
Regarding the potential for cross-contamination during manufacturing or preparation stages, the Administration noted to producers of these foods that ensuring a product is gluten-free is not limited solely to the ingredients of the final product, but requires adherence to the necessary requirements to prevent cross-contamination during manufacturing or preparation stages, including raw materials, surfaces, tools, equipment, workers, and all practices linked to product safety.
The Administration affirmed that field surveys and inspection campaigns are ongoing to verify facility compliance with approved requirements, calling on citizens to verify that an establishment has obtained the necessary approvals before purchasing or ordering products categorized as "gluten-free," as facilities are required to display the JFDA approval clearly to the public.
Furthermore, the Administration called on the public to contact it in case of any complaint, observation, or inquiry 24/7 via the hotline at 117114 and via WhatsApp at 0795632000.
