The Financial Times reported on Saturday that the United States has requested oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz to sail only at specific times to ensure military protection, following an escalation in Iranian attacks on vessels traveling at night.
Since May, Washington has provided air protection for ships wishing to navigate along a route hugging the coast of the Sultanate of Oman on the southern side of the strait.
Citing emails sent by the US Maritime Coordination Center to maritime advisers, the newspaper reported that the periods during which vessels are protected have been reduced to two specific daily time slots since the beginning of September.
The Financial Times also reported on Friday that foreign ministers of Gulf countries plan to meet with their Iranian counterpart as part of an effort led by Oman and Iran to reach agreement on an interim deal to manage maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The newspaper quoted two informed sources stating that the meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday in the Omani coastal city of Salalah.
