Lebanese President Joseph Aoun visited the city of Nabatieh in southern Lebanon on Saturday, near the Ali Al-Taher hill where Israel claimed on Saturday to have destroyed an extensive network of underground Hezbollah tunnels, according to the National News Agency.
This visit came a day after an American official announced that the next round of US-sponsored negotiations between Israel and Lebanon was postponed to October, after having been scheduled for next week in Rome.
The National News Agency reported Saturday that Aoun made his unannounced visit to Nabatieh accompanied by Army Commander General Rodolphe Haykal and leaders of the security agencies.
During the visit, the President expressed his solidarity with the local residents who gathered to welcome him, according to footage broadcast by local media.
Speaking in front of Nabatieh Governmental Hospital, Aoun said, "We are here to thank the hospital staff for their steadfastness, and we take pride in them, because despite the difficult conditions, they risked and continue to risk their lives to provide the minimum level of medical services" in the area, from which the majority of residents have been displaced.
The intensity of fighting had calmed following a memorandum of understanding reached between Iran and the United States in June, followed by the conclusion of a framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel.
However, Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon have intensified in recent days, particularly in the Nabatieh region. The Israeli occupation army claimed on Thursday to have blown up a Hezbollah underground tunnel network in the strategic Ali Al-Taher heights, just a few kilometers from the city of Nabatieh.
Following the Israeli occupation army's announcement, a 4.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded in southern Lebanon, according to the US Geological Survey.
In less than a week, Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the martyrdom of at least 29 people, including 12 members of a single family.
The Lebanese Army warned on Wednesday that the Israeli "escalation" in the south of the country threatens the implementation of the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel.
