Approval of Board of Trustees Formation for Kingdom University for Medical Sciences in Preparation to Begin Studies in 2027 with MD Program Developed in Partnership with UCL Medical School
(Amman, Jordan – September 12, 2026):
The Education and Human Resources Council, in its recent session chaired by His Excellency Prof. Dr. Azmi Mahafzah, Minister of Education and Human Resources, approved the formation of the Board of Trustees of the Kingdom University for Medical Sciences for a four-year term, effective August 30, 2026.
The decision established the Board of Trustees under the chairmanship of His Excellency Mr. Samir Zaid Al-Rifai, former Prime Minister, with the following members:
H.E. Prof. Dr. Labib Mohammad Hassan Al-Khadra, former Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research;
Prof. Dr. Islam Massad, former President of Yarmouk University and former Medical Director of Jordan University Hospital;
Prof. Dr. Ismail Matalka, President of Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Sciences University and former Director of King Abdullah University Hospital;
Eng. Bashar Arafeh, Chairman of Electronic Health Solutions (EHS);
Mr. Saad Mouasher, Chairman of Jordan Ahli Bank;
Mr. Fadi Al-Said, Chairman of Kingdom Healthcare and Medical Education;
Eng. Khalil Al-Saket, CEO of Depa Group and Board Member of Kingdom Healthcare and Medical Education;
H.E. Dr. Tariq Hammouri, former Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply;
Ms. Muna Sukhtian, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Microfund for Women.
The appointment comes at a pivotal stage in the university's development as work progresses toward completing its academic structure and preparing to launch the educational process, receiving its first cohort of medical students in 2027. The board's composition reflects the university's intent to establish a robust, governed institutional framework utilizing diverse expertise to support development during the founding phase.
The Board of Trustees will oversee the general orientation of the university and support its institutional and academic trajectory, strengthening the integration between medical education, clinical training, and scientific research within the unified Kingdom Healthcare and Medical Education ecosystem.
Kingdom University for Medical Sciences offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program developed in academic partnership with UCL Medical School (University College London). The program awards students two academic degrees over six years: a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Basic Medical Sciences at the end of the third year, and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the end of the sixth year.
This partnership leverages the expertise of UCL Medical School—which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year—specifically in medical education, research, curriculum development, and assessment. UCL is ranked 8th globally in the QS World University Rankings for 2027.
The curriculum combines scientific foundations, medical knowledge, early clinical training, research, and innovative methods, integrating technology and artificial intelligence to prepare students for rapid developments in healthcare and medical practice.
The university features an integrated academic medical center alongside Kingdom University Hospital, establishing direct links between medical education, clinical practice, and scientific research. The university is scheduled to receive its first cohort of 150 students in September 2027, with current work focusing on finalizing academic programming, recruiting faculty, meeting accreditation requirements, and preparing for admissions.
