Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi affirmed on Saturday that his country supports a political solution between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen, amid the ongoing deadly confrontation between the two parties.
In the wake of the war triggered by an American-Israeli attack on Iran in February, a truce that had been in place in Yemen since 2022 collapsed in July. Fighting subsequently resumed, with the Houthis making ground advances and securing control over the western coast and the Bab al-Mandab Strait area—whose strategic importance to Riyadh has heightened amid Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
For over ten days, Saudi Arabia has faced near-daily missile and drone attacks carried out by the terrorist Houthi militia, including an attack on Riyadh Airport on October 10 that resulted in 13 deaths and more than 300 injuries, marking the most severe assault on the Kingdom in over a decade.
Speaking on Saturday in Baghdad, where he was attending a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Araghchi stated: "We support the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Yemen, and we support the same for Saudi Arabia." He added: "We support an inclusive and comprehensive political solution, as it is the only practical and sustainable path to resolving this issue."
Araghchi renewed Iran's offer of mediation between the two sides, following earlier statements by his deputy, Saeed Khatibzadeh, indicating that Riyadh had not responded to Tehran's initiative.
The minister further remarked that "either we build security together, or we will endure insecurity together," emphasizing Tehran's readiness "to cooperate with all its brothers and neighbors to achieve the first option."
