The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it will close all land crossings with the occupied West Bank on election day, following the killing of two Israeli soldiers inside the West Bank.
The Israeli army stated that "the political leadership approved a ban on the entry and exit of Palestinian workers throughout the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, including industrial zones, in addition to closing all land crossings throughout election day, Tuesday, October 27, 2026."
On Saturday, thousands of demonstrators marched in Tel Aviv in a protest against the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, three days before a pivotal election that will serve as a referendum on the prime minister himself.
The protests were called for by the "October Council," a group founded by the families of those killed and hostages held in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to demand accountability for those responsible for the failure to prevent Hamas's attack that triggered the war in the Palestinian enclave.
This demonstration comes after years of campaigns led by Israeli civil society and opposition parties demanding the formation of an independent commission of inquiry into the security failures that led to the events of October 7.
Netanyahu's government has refused to form an independent commission of inquiry, despite Israel having formed similar committees in the past to investigate major state-level failures.
Instead, the government proposed forming a "political" committee in which the ruling coalition would appoint half of its members, while opposition lawmakers would appoint the other half.
Opposition leaders refused to participate in forming a "political" committee.
