Karak: The Epitome of Our National Unity

To anyone asking why those vile individuals who crawled out of their burrows chose Karak of all cities to execute their cowardly and treacherous operation, we must look closely at their objective: to strike our internal front and undermine Jordanian national unity.
Karak was targeted precisely because it represents the highest model of unity, brotherhood, and shared living. I avoid using the term "coexistence" because it implies a mere attempt at living together, whereas Jordan has always been an authentic model of shared life—not only between Muslims and Christians, but among Jordanians of all origins and backgrounds.
Why did this operation happen at this specific time, bearing the contaminated signature of extremist ideology? Is it an isolated sleeper cell, or does it have external roots and connections? These are questions requiring answers from our security agencies, in whose strategic depth and capacity we place absolute trust.
The timing of the operation is deeply malicious. It coincided with Netanyahu’s field operations in Hebron—reminding us that Hebron has historically been Karak's twin. It also comes nearly a month after His Majesty King Abdullah II’s address at the United Nations, where he successfully recalibrated the global compass toward a clear truth: the conflict in the West Bank is not a Jewish-Muslim war, but a Zionist assault against both Christians and Muslims in the East, where Eastern Christians have lived in security under the protection of this land's people for over 1,400 years.
This operation is the inevitable result of sick, foreign extremist ideology marrying external agendas seeking to spread chaos in our country. Thank God, the alertness of our people and security services foiled the plotters on Friday. The incident only reinforced our cohesion, as the tribes of Karak etched their unity in golden letters in the books of history.
History will remember Karak’s youth from all tribes rushing to hospitals to donate blood. History will record how the tribes of Humud and Al-Samakiyya received their brothers with open arms, weeping for their victims on the shoulders of fellow Karakians at the height of grief. History will remember them just as it remembers Ibrahim and Ulya Al-Dhumour, who witnessed their sons being burned before their eyes to protect their guest from Nablus, refusing to surrender him to the Ottoman governor. History will remember them alongside the Al-Majali family in the late 19th century, who surrendered themselves to execution rather than allow Karakian blood to be spilled when Turkish forces besieged the Al-Zuraiqat encampment.
What magnificent scenes of national unity we witnessed—lessons that should be taught in our school curricula. Yesterday, towns across Madaba, Salt, and Mafraq canceled their wedding celebrations and festivities in solidarity with Karak and its martyrs. And how inspiring was the Karakian woman injured in the attack who told television cameras: "I am a Jordanian Karakian first... and then I am a Christian." All these moments reflect the deep-rooted strength of our people when facing the hard test of terror and affliction.
His Majesty set the pledge firmly: "We will them." He remains the decisive voice on the necessity of eradicating extremist ideology from its roots. Though this blow is painful to us all, we pledge before God, the King, and the pure blood of our martyrs that Jordan’s people will never be divided. The holy Jordan River that united both banks is the same holy river in which Christ was baptized, and the Christians of this land are an integral part of us whom we protect with our very eyes.
Now is the time for a real battle: strengthening our internal front, cleansing the nation of sick extremist ideas that no Jordanian can accept, standing shoulder-to-shoulder behind our wise leadership, and supporting our security agencies who have fought this battle against extremism for years. It is also time for society to self-reflect and reject any trace of this ideology within families and communities.
We heal our wounds quickly, as Jordanians always do in times of adversity. We rise above the deep pain, fully confident in the ability of our security agencies to track down the perpetrators, apprehend them, and bring them to justice. Every Jordanian today is a victim of this grave tragedy.
Perhaps the most eloquent response came on Friday night, when Jordanians gathered spontaneously outside an Amman church, standing hand-in-hand with their brothers in blood, reciting Surah Al-Fatiha aloud for the souls of the martyrs—a majestic scene proving to those who wish this country ill that their efforts have failed. This nation knows no division or sectarianism, preserved by God through all trials, both seen and unseen.
