Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Asaad Al-Shaibani stated that relations between Syria and Jordan are "at their finest," emphasizing that the two countries have not witnessed a similar level of bilateral relations in a century.
Speaking during a visit to a wake in Daraa, southern Syria, the foreign minister added that the strength of relations between both nations must be invested to address problems and incidents that may arise, stressing that such events will not lead to the termination of relations; rather, their robustness should be leveraged to resolve issues with justice and truth.
He emphasized the necessity of utilizing the incident to reinforce ties between the two countries, pointing out that "voices of sedition" were waiting for a spark between Syria and Jordan, but awareness on both sides prevented achieving that.
Al-Shaibani affirmed that the Jordanian leadership was not satisfied with the civilian casualties in the incident and demonstrated genuine concern in addressing it, noting that Jordan responded by forming a committee to follow up on the case and investigate its circumstances.
He explained that the Jordanian side demonstrated interest in the incident and did not handle it with indifference, clarifying that Jordanian officials offered condolences for the victims, interacted with the humanitarian aspect, and paid close attention to the investigation process.
He noted that the incident was handled with responsibility by both the Jordanian and Syrian governments, emphasizing that the two countries are neighbors, and "Jordan's security is part of Syria's security, and Syria's security is part of Jordan's security."
He pointed out that relations between the two peoples rest on historical and popular ties, emphasizing the importance of preserving bonds of affection and communication, and not allowing incidents to impact these connections.
Al-Shaibani praised Jordan's stances during the Syrian revolution, stressing that such an incident will not end the relationship between the two countries.
He expressed hope for the success of the committee's work and for additional investigations to be conducted by the Jordanian side regarding the incident, in a manner that contributes to resolving the case and achieving justice.
He reaffirmed the importance of moving past the incident, strengthening Syrian-Jordanian relations at both the popular and official levels, and working on building and fortifying them day by day.
