AMMAN
Director of the Construction Department at the Greater Amman Municipality, Hani Al-Marashdeh, confirmed that field teams handled the implications of the atmospheric instability experienced across various regions of the Kingdom, which was characterized by heavy rainfall.
Speaking to "Al-Mamlaka," he explained that field crews were on high alert across various districts, dealing directly and swiftly with a number of sites that witnessed torrent formation and limited rainwater accumulations.
He pointed out that there are no new hotspots in the capital, Amman, but rather previously monitored and identified sites where work is currently underway to execute projects aimed at developing rainwater drainage networks through the construction of box and tubular culverts.
He clarified that certain water accumulations resulted from runoffs and water gathering due to the nature of the mountainous terrain and steep slopes. This can lead to the movement of soil and debris into drainage lines and culverts, requiring field intervention to clear obstacles and ensure smooth drainage.
He added that rainwater drainage networks are operating with high efficiency; however, the intensity of rainfall and the speed of surface runoff may occasionally cause delays in water entering the tubular and box drainage lines. This may an impression of a defect in network efficiency, whereas it is related to the nature of the weather condition, rainfall quantities, and the speed of water flow.
He noted that water accumulations generally begin to recede and drain within a short period after rainfall stops or its intensity diminishes, explaining that the duration of standing water in most sites does not exceed approximately ten minutes, coinciding with field teams intervening to remove any obstructions that might hinder the drainage process.
Al-Marashdeh affirmed the continuation of monitoring and exploration efforts with the onset of the rainy season to identify sites that may experience future water accumulations and study appropriate solutions, whether through immediate interventions or the execution of new infrastructure projects, noting that work remains ongoing at several sites where culvert construction projects are still under implementation.
