AMMAN
The House of Representatives recorded on Monday a historic precedent, the first of its kind in the history of Jordanian parliamentary life, with the election of MP Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh as Speaker of the 20th House of Representatives in its third ordinary session, becoming the first Speaker to assume the office previously held by his brother, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Atef Al-Tarawneh.
The election of Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh arrives approximately 13 years after the election of his brother Atef as Speaker of the 17th House of Representatives on November 3, 2013, before he continued to preside over the House during successive parliamentary sessions until 2020.
Thereby, brothers Ibrahim and Atef Al-Tarawneh establish a precedent in the history of the Jordanian House of Representatives by holding the leadership of the legislative authority across two distinct periods.
Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh is the third individual bearing the Al-Tarawneh surname to assume the Speakership of the House of Representatives, following Ahmad Al-Tarawneh, who presided over the 4th House of Representatives in the 1950s, and Atef Al-Tarawneh, who held the presidency between 2013 and 2020.
Speakership of Atef Al-Tarawneh
Atef Al-Tarawneh was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives for the first time on November 3, 2013, during the first ordinary session of the 17th House, following a contest with MPs Saad Hayel Al-Srour and Abdul Karim Al-Dughmi.
At the time, Al-Tarawneh secured 60 votes, compared to 43 votes for Al-Dughmi and 37 votes for Al-Srour, prior to Al-Dughmi announcing his withdrawal from the second round, leading to the declaration of Al-Tarawneh's victory as Speaker of the House.
Atef Al-Tarawneh continued his presidency of the 17th House of Representatives throughout its ordinary sessions, and subsequently the 18th House of Representatives, holding the Speakership for seven consecutive ordinary sessions.
Former Syndicate President and Senator Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh
Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh is undertaking his first term as a member of the House of Representatives during the 20th Parliament, having previously served as a member of the Senate and holding the post of President of the Jordanian Dental Association.
Al-Tarawneh headed the parliamentary block of Al-Meethaq Al-Watani (National Charter) Party and served on the Financial and Foreign Affairs Committees during the first ordinary session, as well as the Financial and Palestine Committees during the second ordinary session.
His election comes after Al-Meethaq Al-Watani Party block selected him as its candidate for the Speakership of the House of Representatives, within an agreement reached by four parliamentary blocks on October 29, 2026, regarding the distribution of positions on the Permanent Bureau of the House for its third session.
The agreement between Al-Meethaq, Mubadara, Azem, and the Center Parties and Reform blocks stipulated allocating the Speakership of the House to Al-Meethaq block, the First Deputy Speaker to Mubadara, the Second Deputy Speaker to Azem, and the two Assistant Speaker positions to the Center Parties and Reform block.
Article 69 of the Jordanian Constitution stipulates that the House of Representatives shall elect a Speaker at the beginning of each ordinary session for a period of one calendar year, and the Speaker may be re-elected.
