AMMAN
Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Eng. Yarub Qudah, affirmed that protecting national food security, guaranteeing the continuity of supply chains, and maintaining a safe strategic reserve of essential food commodities stand at the forefront of government priorities to ensure citizens' needs are met under all circumstances.
Qudah highlighted the importance of strengthening the strategic reserve of food commodities and ensuring their availability in sufficient quantities across local markets in preparation for the Holy Month of Ramadan, thereby contributing to meeting consumer needs and maintaining price stability.
This came during a meeting convened by Qudah on Tuesday at the ministry's headquarters with representatives of the food trade sector. The meeting was attended by Chairman of the Temporary Committee for the Management of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce Wael Shuqairat, Chairman of the Steering Committee for the Amman Chamber of Commerce Mohammad Abu Odeh, alongside several merchants and sector representatives, to discuss supply chain realities, challenges facing the sector, and mechanisms to guarantee the uninterrupted flow of goods into local markets.
Qudah underscored the importance of public-private partnership in preserving market stability and providing basic commodities at fair and reasonable prices. He stressed ongoing coordination with chambers of commerce and private sector representatives to monitor regional and international developments and their reflections on import and shipping, while addressing any obstacles that might affect supply fluidity.
For their part, Shuqairat and Abu Odeh affirmed the necessity of continuing cooperation and coordination with the ministry, simplifying import procedures, and overcoming obstacles facing merchants to guarantee the continuous inflow of food items, preserve market stability, and maintain commodity availability for citizens.
Merchants reviewed the key challenges confronting the sector, notably rising import and freight costs, praising the ministry's responsiveness to their feedback and its commitment to consultative dialogue to reach practical solutions that facilitate sector operations, enhance competitiveness, and support the national economy.
