Amman – Low-cost carriers have started gradually resuming flights to Jordan from Europe, according to Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) chief Haitham Misto.
Misto told Petra that Hungary’s Wizz Air has begun operating two weekly flights from Budapest, while Ryanair will return with flights to 16 European destinations starting 28 October, launching first with two routes from 20 September.
He said three other low-cost carriers are studying plans to operate regular services between Europe and Jordan. Ryanair has already been granted approval for scheduled winter-season flights to 16 destinations.
Misto explained that airlines apply to CARC for designation as foreign operators in Jordan, supported by approval from their national aviation authorities under bilateral air transport agreements, and must then submit required operational documents.
He noted that permits are granted for two regular seasons—winter (28 Oct–27 Mar) and summer (28 Mar–27 Oct)—with carriers free to choose seasonal or year-round operation.
Low-cost flights are open to all passengers and not limited to tourism, Misto stressed.
Last year, 344,781 passengers arrived in Jordan on low-cost carriers Ryanair and Wizz Air, compared with 885,547 passengers in 2023 through six operators.
