Buses carrying released Palestinian prisoners under the Hamas-Israel ceasefire agreement arrived in Gaza via the Kerem Abu Salem crossing.
The buses transporting Palestinians freed from Israeli prisons reached Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Yunis. In the occupied West Bank, released prisoners arrived at Ramallah Cultural Palace Monday, according to Al-Mamlaka correspondent.
The release of Palestinian prisoners began after Hamas handed over 20 Israeli detainees in Gaza as part of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the Gaza war. The International Committee of the Red Cross received the 20 Israeli detainees who had been held in Gaza since the war started on October 7, 2023, and the Israeli army confirmed receipt.
Israel also released 250 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,718 prisoners from Gaza captured after the war began on October 7, 2023. The released prisoners were gathered from five central prisons, including 107 from Ofer near Ramallah and 143 from Ketziot in the Negev, before being transported to Gaza and then Egypt.
The prisoner exchange is overseen by an Egyptian-Qatari-American committee monitoring the ceasefire agreement implementation. Israeli authorities barred nearly 100 relatives of the released prisoners from traveling Monday.
Trump announced on October 9 that the first phase of his Middle East peace plan, announced September 29, had been agreed, including ending the Gaza war, Israeli withdrawal, humanitarian aid entry, and prisoner exchanges.
