Anti-narcotics departments in Jordan and Syria on Thursday announced a joint intelligence operation that foiled an attempt to smuggle 5.5 million narcotic pills through the Jaber border crossing.
According to a joint statement, the operation followed weeks of information exchange between the two countries regarding a regional smuggling network preparing to transport a large quantity of drugs through Jordan for transit to other regional markets.
Intelligence efforts allowed authorities to track a large refrigerated truck as it moved toward the border. Upon its arrival at the Jaber crossing, security and customs officials intercepted the vehicle and arrested the driver.
A specialized search team discovered 943 kg of dough-like cubes hidden in the roof of the truck. Laboratory testing confirmed the substance was Captagon paste, which authorities said was sufficient to produce 5.5 million pills upon processing.
Joint investigative procedures are ongoing as authorities work to apprehend all members of the criminal network involved in the smuggling attempt.
