German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the United States remains a fundamental pillar of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) despite differing viewpoints. He downplayed tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump following Washington's announcement to reduce the number of its troops stationed in Germany.
In an interview with the German network ARD, scheduled for broadcast later Sunday, Merz said: "I remain convinced that the Americans are our most important partner in NATO."
When asked whether U.S. plans to reduce its military presence in Germany were linked to the disagreement between the two leaders regarding Trump's strategy toward Iran, Merz replied: "There is no connection."
