The American website Axios reported on Wednesday that Washington believes it is on the verge of reaching a breakthrough agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and conclude the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Sources familiar with the matter revealed the existence of a single-page memorandum of understanding designed to end hostilities and establish a framework for comprehensive nuclear negotiations.
Washington expects a formal response from Tehran within the next 48 hours. The proposed deal would require Iran to freeze its uranium enrichment in exchange for the United States lifting specific sanctions and releasing billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets. Furthermore, both nations would lift restrictions currently hampering maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz. While a final agreement has not yet been signed, sources indicate the probability of a resolution is at its highest level since the war began.
The development follows President Trump’s recent decision to suspend "Operation Freedom Project," a maritime security initiative launched just days ago. While Iranian media characterized the suspension as a "retreat," the U.S. administration clarified the move was a response to diplomatic requests from regional partners and a reflection of "significant progress" in talks. The 14-point memorandum proposes an immediate cessation of conflict followed by a 30-day negotiation window to finalize technical details regarding the nuclear program and maritime protocols.
