U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officials announced Monday that 18 passengers from a luxury cruise ship experiencing a Hantavirus outbreak have been airlifted back to the United States and placed in quarantine. One passenger, who tested positive for the virus, remains in a specialized biological containment unit in Nebraska.
The passengers are currently under observation at U.S. medical facilities to ensure they have not contracted the illness. During a press conference, HHS officials specified that 16 individuals were transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, while two others were sent to Atlanta; one of the passengers in Atlanta is reportedly symptomatic.
The Outbreak Context
The individuals were passengers on the Hondius, a luxury expedition vessel. The outbreak is linked to the Andes strain, which is the only known type of Hantavirus capable of limited person-to-person transmission. Typically, Hantavirus is spread through contact with wild rodents.
Public Health Risk Assessment
U.S. health officials emphasized that the risk to the general public remains extremely low. Admiral Brian Christen, Assistant Secretary for Health, explained that the Andes strain "does not spread easily" and generally requires close, prolonged contact with a symptomatic individual to transmit.
The situation continues to be monitored by the CDC and relevant health authorities to prevent further spread of the Andes variant within the U.S.
