Eight people were killed and five others injured following a random shooting that targeted bystanders in the Abnoub district of the Assiut Governorate in Upper Egypt.
Security sources reported on Monday that the perpetrator, driving a private vehicle, fired a heavy barrage of bullets at citizens in several vital areas, including the general transport station and the main square, causing widespread panic and casualties.
Following the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and tracked the suspect to an agricultural zone within the district. The perpetrator opened fire on the police during the arrest attempt, initiating a shootout that resulted in his death.
Ambulances rushed the injured to Abnoub General Hospital for medical treatment, and the bodies of the victims were transferred to the same facility for legal procedures. Preliminary investigations by security authorities indicated that the attacker suffered from severe psychological disorders and had been receiving periodic treatment at a mental health hospital in Cairo. The public prosecution has launched an official investigation to uncover the full circumstances of the incident.
