US police stated that two young men opened fire on Monday at the Islamic Center in San Diego, California, killing three men outside the center's mosque, including a security guard. Authorities added that the two suspects were later found dead, having apparently turned their weapons on themselves.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl confirmed that the safety and whereabouts of all children at a day school within the mosque complex—the largest in San Diego County—were verified following the shooting, which occurred shortly before 12:00 PM local time (19:00 GMT).
Wahl added that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been called in to assist with the investigation into the incident, which authorities are treating as a hate crime.
Dozens of law enforcement officers dispatched to the Islamic Center discovered the bodies of three men shot dead outside the building. Among the victims was a security guard whom Wahl credited with preventing further loss of life.
The police chief stated during an afternoon press conference that shortly after responding, officers discovered the bodies of the two suspects, aged 17 and 19, inside a vehicle in the middle of the street. Both had died from what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. He noted that investigators are still gathering details regarding the motives and circumstances of the shooting.
A landscaper was also shot at a few blocks away in an apparently separate incident, though police have not definitively ruled out a connection. Wahl stated that the landscaper was not harmed.
