Spokesperson for the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Omar Salameh, announced on Tuesday that recent illegal encroachments on the Disi water system in the Al-Jafr area resulted in the loss of approximately 5,000 cubic meters of water, threatening potential adjustments to water distribution schedules in Amman and Zarqa.
The attack targeted several air release valves used to regulate pressure along a 25-kilometer stretch of the 450-kilometer pipeline, which supplies approximately 300,000 cubic meters of water daily. Technical teams are currently working to manage the damage without halting pump operations, as a full shutdown would lead to multi-day water outages across the capital and surrounding regions.
Salameh noted that illegal disruptions targeting the Disi system have escalated dramatically since its initial operation—rising from 37 recorded incidents at launch to 307 in 2015, and reaching 1,853 cases in 2025.
Highlighting that the financial burden of lost water is borne directly by the national treasury, Salameh called for stricter legal penalties against violators. He urged that acts of vandalism against critical water infrastructure be treated as matters of national economic and water security, particularly in light of Jordan's severe water scarcity and ongoing supply deficits.
