Half of Jordanian Youth Suffer from Unemployment; Educational Choices Must Align with Evolving Labor Market

The Jordan Labor Watch issued a statement marking International Youth Day, highlighting that Jordanian youth continue to face severe economic, educational, and employment challenges, led by high unemployment rates and a disconnect between educational outcomes and market needs.
Official data indicates that the unemployment rate among Jordanians aged 15 to 24 reached 45% in the first quarter of 2026, meaning nearly half of the country's youth are unemployed. Although more than 48,000 net job opportunities were created during the first half of 2025, youth unemployment remained stubbornly high, raising concerns regarding job quality, stability, and alignment with youth skills.
Following the recent announcement of the 2026 Tawjihi (high school matriculation) results—which recorded an overall pass rate of 65.3%—the Jordan Labor Watch urged students and parents to base their educational choices on real market demand rather than social prestige. Students were advised to avoid saturated majors and pursue applied and digital fields, including artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, software development, and financial technology.
Aligning with International Labour Organization (ILO) priorities in Jordan, the Labor Watch emphasized the importance of strengthening vocational and technical training, addressing barriers facing young women and youth in governorates, and phasing out stagnant academic programs to build a resilient, future-ready workforce.
