The scope of confrontations in Yemen is expanding as government forces activate new fronts across several governorates, in parallel with escalating Houthi pressure on the West Coast, in a scene that may reflect a shift in the course of the military confrontation after years of relative stalemate.
While military operations recently focused on areas west of Taiz and south of Hodeidah, government forces began activating simultaneous combat axes in Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda, in the north and center of the country, alongside Marib, achieving field advances at the expense of the Houthi militia.
These developments point to a change in the course of the confrontation, after the internal Yemeni fronts over the past four years remained captive to temporary stagnation due to the UN truce.
These field moves open the door to the possibility of confrontations transitioning from limited operations to a wider pattern, amid efforts by the Presidential Leadership Council aimed at enhancing coordination among various military formations, raising their capabilities, and boosting their readiness in preparation to establish new field realities.
On Monday evening, Assistant Yemeni Minister of Defense, Major General Samir Sabri, confirmed that the decision to liberate Yemen's areas from the Houthis "has been made, and its implementation has actually begun."
In statements to official television, he said that the Houthi militia deludes itself into thinking that fighting will remain confined to the West Coast front while calm continues across the rest of the fronts as usual, adding that "matters today are different and the battle has become collective, given the international mood aggrieved by this faction that has disturbed Yemen, the region, and the world."
Choking Sanaa
Security analyst Asem Al-Mujahid considers that what is notable in recent developments is the government forces' shift from defense to offense and regaining the initiative, after absorbing Houthi attacks in Taiz and the West Coast, coinciding with the intensification and expansion of airstrikes.
Al-Mujahid explained in his interview with Erem News that the importance of the current moves is linked to the nature of the axes being activated, noting that Al-Bayda represents an important gateway toward Sanaa from the south and southeast, and that escalating operations there could sever Houthi communication lines between Sanaa and several governorates, forcing the militia to distribute its forces over wider areas.
