Omani Energy Minister: Strait of Hormuz Will Reopen, Current Situation Likely Short-Term

Omani Minister of Energy and Minerals Salim bin Nasser Al-Aufi stated on Monday that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen, expecting the current situation to be short-term and to stabilize in the medium term.
Al-Aufi added that he is pleased Oman remains able to continue producing oil and gas, noting that extreme surges in oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices are unsustainable for everyone.
He emphasized the need to diversify exit points and establish alternative options for energy exports, whether through the Sultanate of Oman or Yemen.
Al-Aufi's remarks come amidst regional developments linked to the Strait of Hormuz. Axios quoted a Gulf official on Sunday stating that Saudi Arabia submitted amendments to the Omani-Iranian proposal regarding the strait.
According to the official, the amendments were introduced due to Saudi concerns that the proposed wording could cement a new reality in the strait that GCC states cannot accept.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi announced on Sunday the postponement to a later date of a regional meeting between Gulf states and Iran, which had been scheduled for Monday in the city of Salalah to discuss potential agreements regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Al-Busaidi stated in a post on platform X that the decision to postpone was made "to ensure favorable conditions for a constructive dialogue that contributes to reaching sustainable understandings supporting the region's security and stability, while fulfilling its peoples' aspirations for cooperation and peace."
Iran's Fars News Agency quoted an official from the Iranian Foreign Ministry stating that the meeting was postponed at the request of certain regional countries in a decision taken jointly between Tehran and Muscat, adding that Iran will coordinate with Oman to set an appropriate date.
Iranian officials had previously announced they would attend the meeting with Gulf states to present an agreement with Oman concerning the regulation of navigation routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
In a related context, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated in an interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that Iran will not reopen the strait unless the United States meets Tehran's demands, regardless of any agreement with the Sultanate of Oman.
These developments coincide with pressure on energy supplies, as oil prices rose at the start of Monday's trading following developments threatening supplies from Saudi Arabia—the world's largest oil exporter—which kept a key 1,200-kilometer East-West pipeline closed over the weekend after it sustained damage from drone attacks on Friday.
