MPs Bakr Al-Kasasbeh and Lubna Al-Namoor have called on the government to take urgent measures to enhance public safety and occupational health, and to curb incidents of ammonia gas and hazardous material leaks at the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company's industrial complex in Aqaba.
In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Dr. Jafar Hassan, the MPs noted that the recurrence of gas and hazardous material leaks, along with the accompanying injuries, asphyxiation cases, and burns, necessitates treating these incidents as a matter of public safety and occupational health rather than isolated operational accidents.
The two MPs demanded that the ammonia tanks inside the industrial complex undergo an urgent, comprehensive, and independent technical inspection, and that any tanks technically proven to be worn out, past their safe operational lifespan, or failing to meet safety requirements be replaced.
They stressed that temporary maintenance or quick-fix solutions should not suffice if technical reports prove the tanks need replacement, emphasizing that any potential risk to workers and surrounding areas cannot be treated as a routine technical issue.
Furthermore, they requested a comprehensive review of the occupational health and safety system across the complex, including tanks, transmission pipelines, valves, pressure and cooling systems, early leak detection systems, alarms, automatic shut-offs, ventilation, and emergency protocols.
They also called for ensuring the effectiveness of workers' personal protective equipment, the readiness of evacuation and emergency response plans, and the provision of adequate training for staff on handling hazardous materials.
The MPs demanded that emergency procedures be clear, practically tested, and coordinated with the Civil Defense and relevant health and specialized authorities to ensure a rapid response and minimize losses in the event of any incident.
