The US Department of State and several of its embassies in the Middle East have warned American citizens of potential unexpected regional escalations, urging increased vigilance amid ongoing tensions and highlighting the potential for flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
The State Department stated that the security environment in the Middle East "remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation," advising Americans currently in the region to exercise heightened caution and urging those outside the region to seriously reconsider traveling to or through it. Travelers were also urged to monitor airport and airline operations directly.
The warning coincided with security alerts issued by several US diplomatic missions in the region. The State Department highlighted that Iran-backed Houthis have engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports, warning that the military conflict could escalate rapidly.
It further cautioned that US diplomatic facilities—including those outside the Middle East—have been targeted, and that Iran and its aligned groups may target other US interests, businesses, and institutions worldwide.
Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition announced Saturday evening the interception and destruction of a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis toward Riyadh, where explosions were heard at dawn for the first time since the resurgence of hostilities. Saudi authorities issued the first air-raid alert in the capital since renewed fighting in Yemen.
US embassies in the region urged citizens to avoid traveling to military bases, noting that Iran has also attacked civilian and critical infrastructure across the Middle East, including hotels, airports, and other civilian sites.
In the event of an aerial attack, authorities recommended staying away from glass doors, windows, and falling debris, keeping mobile devices charged, pre-programming emergency numbers, and monitoring official guidance. Travelers were urged to verify flight statuses directly with airlines or airport operators.
The State Department and embassies recommended enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time security updates and facilitate communication during emergencies. Additional guidance included maintaining situational awareness, avoiding demonstrations, large gatherings, and heavy police presence, following local authority instructions, exercising caution around US-affiliated locations, and keeping a low profile.
