Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called on the international community on Friday to condemn what he described as "ecocide" in the Middle East resulting from "wars of aggression".
Pezeshkian pointed out that conflicts in Gaza and the broader Middle East region have had major transboundary repercussions on nature, necessitating "international solutions".
Addressing a nature summit hosted by Armenia and attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres days before the opening of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), Pezeshkian stated: "What has occurred in our region as a result of aggressive wars is comprehensive environmental destruction, or ecocide, and it is something that must be condemned".
