Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk unveiled a sports car he described as "flying," equipped with a propulsion system that enables it to rise into the air, during an event broadcast live from a facility belonging to his rocket company, SpaceX.
Until now, technical and regulatory challenges have hindered the launch of the widely promoted flying car sector.
Musk revealed his new "Roadster" sports car during a ceremony held at a SpaceX rocket testing facility in the U.S. state of Texas.
During a live broadcast on Tesla's account on the X platform, the vehicle launched off a steep ramp before landing on its wheels.
"Flying cars are a reality," Musk said during the event, adding that the vehicle's success is "not guaranteed," but predicting that it will "probably work."
Musk explained that the vehicle is equipped with "ultra-high-pressure air tanks" that allow it to propel itself into the air.
The tech billionaire described the innovation as the result of "collaboration between the best car company in the world and the best rocket company in the world," referring to Tesla and SpaceX.
He stated that production of the vehicle will begin in 2028.
American aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss revealed the first prototype of a flying car in 1917.
However, the development of viable designs only began receiving serious attention in recent years, alongside advancements in electric motor technology and high-performance batteries.
