Amman, September 14 (Publishers Union) - The Jordanian Publishers Union announced in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Haifa Al-Najjar, at the Royal Cultural Center today, Thursday. About the activities of the Amman International Book Fair 2023, which is organized by the Publishers Union under the Royal Patronage in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and the Greater Amman Municipality in the Amman Motor Show hall - Airport Road from September 21-30.
400 local, Arab and international publishing houses from 22 countries are participating in the exhibition, directly and through agency, with an unprecedented rental space in the history of the exhibition, amounting to 9,000 square metres. Minister of Culture Haifa Al-Najjar said in a press statement today that the establishment of the Amman International Book Fair in its 22nd session and its continuation for more than two decades confirms the position that Jordan holds in the Arab and international world, and the confidence that has been achieved as an important center for the book industry and marketing, adding that the importance of the book It is confirmed as a tributary of the wheel of the economy, and as part of the creative cultural industries that contribute to shaping our awareness, our national narrative, and our diverse circle of acquaintances with sources of knowledge.
She explained that due to the importance of this exhibition as a national title, it has received royal patronage from 2016 until now, and it is a continuation of the principles upon which the Jordanian state was founded since its founding, with culture as an essential pillar of its pillars.
Al-Najjar welcomed the State of Qatar, the guest of honor of the exhibition and the participating delegation, as the sister country with which we have deep cultural relations, and the guests from the sister countries, with the increase in knowledge they bring in literature, science and knowledge. She also congratulated the historian and Dr. Hind Abu Al-Shaar for her choice (the character of the exhibition), as an innovator and activist. For his part, the head of the Jordanian Publishers Union and the exhibition director, Jabr Abu Fares, said that the return of the Amman Book Fair this year to the car showroom hall - Airport Road came after a discussion within the general body and the various exhibition committees, and after a referendum among the publishers, adding that it was approved The location is for reasons that include: the exhibition area, which this year reached 9,000 square meters for the first time in the history of the exhibition, the geometric shape of the exhibition without any obstacles, and to meet the demand of publishing houses to participate in the exhibition, as this year we received a large number of requests for participation, which prompted the committee The technical request apologized to many publishing houses, and only 400 publishing houses were approved.
He pointed out that the cultural program prepared by the Cultural Committee, which includes the Publishers Union, the Ministry of Culture, the Greater Amman Municipality, and the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation, includes more than 65 cultural events, including: cultural seminars, poetry and story evenings, entertainment activities, signing parties, and readings. Stories for children and young people, morning and evening, throughout the exhibition days, with the participation of Jordanian and Arab creators.
Abu Fares pointed out that the exhibition celebrates the academic and historian Dr. Hind Abu Al-Shaar, who was chosen as the cultural figure of the exhibition for her academic efforts, and the State of Qatar is the guest of honor this year through a cultural program that reflects the civilized face of the sisterly country and its cultural message, and shows the development of the publishing industry in it with the participation of a number of writers. In turn, historian Dr. Hind Abu Al-Shaar, the figure of the Amman Cultural Exhibition, said that she has intellectual projects that will be announced during and after the exhibition, in addition to publishing seven new books within a specific timetable, and continuing to compose new parts of the encyclopedia, of which she published four volumes two years ago, which “The History of Jordan during the Emirate’s Era” discusses “celebrating the centenary of the Jordanian state.”
She added that she is continuing her well-known role as a writer, as she has collected materials for her next major project, which is a study of “Rural Jordan in the Nineteenth Century,” in addition to the imminent publication of a new short story collection and a new novel.
Dr. Abu Al-Shaar recalled her relationship with the Amman Book Fair since the first session during her work at Al Al-Bayt University, and her assignment to choose history and social studies books from it for purchase for the university library, and later as a participant in the exhibition’s activities, adding that the date of the Amman Book Fair represents an opportunity for every Jordanian citizen to celebrate books and culture and choose for themselves. What he wants for his mind, soul, and heart to be his companion in his home.
For his part, Director of the Public Libraries Department at the Greater Amman Municipality, Dr. Thamer Al-Shoubaki, said that the Secretariat is present through its programs at the Amman International Book Fair, adding that there are special activities for children that the Secretariat will conduct in coordination with the cultural committee of the fair.
He pointed out that the secretariat - as a municipality - is also present through the logistical support that will be provided throughout the exhibition period.
It is noteworthy that the exhibition committees this year, in its 22nd session this year - as in previous sessions - maintained the slogan “Jerusalem, the Capital of Palestine,” so that it would be present in this session, because of what Jerusalem represents in the conscience of the Arab nation, and in the conscience of the Hashemites in particular, and to confirm its Arabism and identity that resides in the hearts of the Arab nation.
