US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that lifting sanctions on Syria aims to offer the country a new beginning.

Speaking at the opening of the US-Gulf summit in Riyadh, Trump said the United States is considering normalising ties with Syria’s new government, starting with a meeting with President Ahmad Al-Sharaa.

Trump added that Washington seeks a deal with Iran but insists Tehran must stop supporting terrorism and abandon nuclear ambitions.

He also said Lebanon has a chance at a future free from Hezbollah’s grip, expressing optimism about the leadership of new President Joseph Aoun and his cabinet.
