US President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a phone call on Friday that he still supports the establishment of a Palestinian state, the White House said amid tensions between the two leaders over the issue.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters: “The president still believes in the prospect and possibility of a two-state solution. He knows it will take a lot of hard work,” he said, according to AFP.
Kirby said at a White House news briefing that Biden welcomed Israel’s decision to allow a shipment of flour into the Gaza Strip.
A spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council said his country supported the humanitarian truces but believed a ceasefire in Gaza would benefit Hamas.
“We support the humanitarian truces, as I said, to try to get the hostages out and bring in more aid, but we don’t support a ceasefire at this time,” Kirby said.
“I think it’s important to remember that a ceasefire was in effect on Oct. 6,” the day before the date of Hamas’s offensive on the Gaza envelope.
The White House on Friday said it was “deeply concerned” by reports that a Palestinian teenager with American citizenship had been killed by Israeli fire in east Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.
Kirby said: “We are deeply concerned about these reports. “So far, there is little information, and we don’t have enough information about exactly what happened.”
