UN Secretary-General António Guterres said Saturday at a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Uganda that “everyone must recognize the right of the Palestinian people to build their own state” and that any “denial” of this right is “unacceptable.”
“The refusal to accept the two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians, as well as the denial of the right of the Palestinian people to statehood, is unacceptable,” Guterres said, adding, “This would indefinitely prolong a conflict that has become a major threat to global peace and security, exacerbating polarization and emboldening extremists around the world.”
The UN Secretary-General stressed that “the right of the Palestinian people to build their own state must be recognized by all.”
The Israeli war on the Gaza Strip broke out on October 7. Since then, the Israeli occupation army has launched an aggression that has resulted in the death of at least 24,927 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to the latest toll of the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
The World Health Organization (WHO) denounced “inhumane living conditions” in the besieged enclave, whose 2.4 million people lack the basics of living.
On Monday, Antonio Guterres reiterated his call for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza.
Recently, the United States, Israel’s main ally, reiterated its support for Palestinian statehood, sparking disagreements with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
In its final statement, the Non-Aligned Movement “strongly condemned Israel’s illegal military aggression on the Gaza Strip” and called for a “lasting humanitarian ceasefire.”
It also called on the countries to “the independence and sovereignty of the State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital to achieve the two-state solution.”
The Non-Aligned Movement was founded in 1961 to raise the voice of nations seeking to distance themselves from the conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union.
