His Majesty King Abdullah II stressed the need to expand vocational education opportunities in universities due to its importance in economic development, during a meeting held on Wednesday at Al-Husseiniya Palace to discuss the education file.
His Majesty the King, in the presence of His Highness Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, the Crown Prince, pointed out the need for the government to prepare its plans to new university specializations to accommodate graduates of vocational education based on the new orientation mechanism.
His Majesty directed the government to give priority to establishing and modernizing technical and vocational education and training schools, and to cooperate effectively with the private sector to support the quality of vocational education outcomes, such as the tourism, hotel and other sectors.
His Majesty the King stressed the importance of monitoring the quality of vocational education provided in accordance with the specified standards, noting the necessity of working to evaluate its impact on an ongoing basis.
In turn, Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh stressed that the government is working to achieve harmonization between general policies for accepting students in higher education institutions and the developed high school system, pointing out that the government is continuing to encourage students to choose professional fields.
His Majesty listened to a briefing presented by the Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Azmi Muhafza, in which he referred to the measures taken by the ministry to implement its plans to achieve this harmonization.
He stated that academic education in high school will be divided into six fields: health, engineering, science and technology, languages and social sciences, Sharia and law, and business, and the specializations that the student can join will be determined.
A graduate of the professional track with a high school diploma can join the labor market, or complete a diploma or bachelor’s degree, according to the governorate.
He pointed out that expanded activities on vocational guidance have been launched to educate students and their families and introduce them to the areas of development of high school and new vocational specializations, noting that new general policies for accepting students into universities will be announced in the first quarter of 2024.
The governor added that work on developing systems must be completed. Admission before January 31, 2025, so that students in the new high school tracks will begin to be accepted into universities in the academic year 2026/2027.
He explained that work is underway to develop mechanisms to involve the private sector in the educational process, starting with the hotel specialization.
