The ceasefire between the United States and Iran appeared to be in jeopardy on Monday, after Washington said it had detained an Iranian cargo ship that attempted to break the blockade imposed on Iran's ports. Tehran vowed to respond and refused to resume negotiations to end the war for the time being.
Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Washington has shown it is "not serious" about seeking a diplomatic process and that Tehran will not change its clear demands. He added that his country does not believe in the existence of grace periods or deadlines when it comes to protecting national interests.
The United States had hoped to restart negotiations in Pakistan before the imminent expiration of a two-week ceasefire. Huge security preparations were seen in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, but Baghaei said the United States is "insisting on some illogical and unrealistic positions."
A senior Iranian source stated that the continued U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports undermines the prospects for talks to end the war, emphasizing that his country's "defense capabilities," including its missile program, are not up for negotiation.
A Pakistani security source mentioned that Army Chief Asim Munir told U.S. President Donald Trump that the blockade constitutes an obstacle to the talks, and that Trump responded by saying he would take that advice into consideration.
